LIVING IN SHEFFIELD
The Location
England is a land of rich history, vibrant cities, beautiful countryside and outstanding universities. Located in north central England, Sheffield is England’s fourth largest city with a population of 430,000.
Sheffield is a city with character, blending elegant Victorian architecture with modern activities. The area is bursting with culture and entertainment, including theatres, museums, galleries, pubs & clubs, music and world-class sports facilities. Sheffield was named the first “National City of Sport” and has Europe’s biggest artificial ski-slope resort. Most all of these attractions are within walking distance of each other, making it a great destination for students.
Sheffield is proud of its 150 woodlands and 50 public parks. One of the most spectacular areas of natural beauty in the UK is just minutes away by bus or train. The Peak District National Park covers 555 square miles of unspoiled countryside. It is a great place to hike, rock climb or just enjoy the scenery.
The city has a tradition of producing great music and it is alive with sounds of up and coming new bands, and attracts famous groups as well. The Showroom is the second-largest independent cinema in the UK and is a center for Sheffield’s serious film fans. Major film festivals are held here every year.
Students from all over the world come to the University of Sheffield and they are an important part of the life of the city. There are plenty of services, shops, and cafes geared towards them. The campus is a short walk to the city center.
Accommodations
Students have an extensive choice of university-owned and selected accommodation, ranging from converted Victorian manor houses to modern student flats and residence halls. Students may choose between single/double, standard/en-suite, or catered/self-catered rooms. Most accommodation is situated in a leafy suburb about a 15 minute walk from the main campus. They’re within easy walking distance from the University, but there’s also a frequent bus service, connecting accommodation, the University, and the city center.
The University of Sheffield guarantees all study abroad students a place in the University accommodation provided you meet the conditions of the guarantee. Details are on the Sheffield housing website.
