ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The University of Sheffield program is ideal for students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds who want to study overseas and do their coursework in English.

The University of Sheffield offers a climate of academic excellence and is considered one of the United Kingdom’s leading universities.  The Sunday Times voted it the “University of the Year” in 2001-02, and recent surveys put the University of Sheffield in the top 10 universities in the UK and the top 20 in Europe.  The quality of teaching has been consistently regarded as excellent.  The University of Sheffield has about 25,000 students, including 3,700 international students from over 120 countries.  OUS students are integrated into the regular British academic program and take classes with both British and other international students. 

Courses at Sheffield are called modules.  Modules are made up of regularly scheduled class sessions of one or more hours per week during the semester.  Depending upon the subject area, these may include lectures, seminars, tutorials and labs. Science modules often have substantial labs.

 Modules are available in a wide range of areas and students from diverse majors are able to find appropriate classes at Sheffield.  Some of the areas of excellence are Animal and Plant Sciences, Ecology, Genetics, Chemistry, Biology, Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology, Archaeology, English, Geography, History, and Political Science.  

Students are also able to arrange individual research projects.

The University of Sheffield provides excellent support to international students, including assistance with arrival, orientation, enrollment, housing, visa issues, disability support, and daily life.  Sheffield has one of the biggest university libraries in the country, and various computer centers are located all over campus.

The University of Sheffield was founded in 1905 and is considered one of the best universities in the UK.  Sheffield is located in north England, in South Yorkshire, and is close to Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, and the Peak District.

Registration and Credits

Students participating in this program will be registered at their home university in Oregon and will receive home campus credits for courses taken at the University of Sheffield.  Students’ course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at their home institutions.  Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by their home university academic departments.

Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the England program.  Students wishing to earn major or minor credits for courses taken at the University of Sheffield are strongly advised to be in frequent communication with their advisor to determine what’s possible.  

Because of the nature of this program, courses and credits are applied after completion of the program.

Classes at Sheffield are usually either 10 units or 20 units in their point system.  A 10 unit class generally will be worth 4 quarter credits and a 20 unit class will likely get 8 quarter credits.

Academic Calendar

The University of Sheffield’s school year is divided into semesters (late September to February and February to June).  Because of the ending date of the autumn semester, OUS students may only go either for the full academic year or for the spring semester.  Students participating for the academic year are registered in Oregon for fall, winter and spring terms.  Students are registered in Oregon for winter and spring terms if attending the Sheffield spring semester.
