The Deakin program is ideal for students in diverse majors as students may enroll in a wide variety of regular university classes such as liberal arts, sciences, architecture, business, education, fisheries & wildlife, nutrition, exercise & sport science, mechanical engineering and construction engineering. Orientations

To prepare adequately for the study program in Australia, students are asked to participate in an all-day pre-departure orientation in Oregon (in November and in May).

Upon arrival in Australia, Deakin University will provide a week long orientation. The orientation begins with a three day stay at the coastal town of Lorne and culminates at your chosen campus. The orientation is designed to make the transition into Australian culture and university life as smooth as possible.

Courses in Australia

Participants are enrolled as regular Deakin students, taking classes with Australian students. There is a range of teaching methods at Deakin, often depending upon the discipline of study. Arts and business students, for example, will generally have a combination of lecture and tutorial classes. Lectures can vary in size from 20 to 200 and the associated tutorial classes are much smaller and allow for open discussion of material. Science and Engineering students usually receive a combination of lecture and laboratory classes. Fieldwork may form a large part of some classes. The formal contact hours vary. However, in general, greater emphasis is placed upon independent study outside of class contact hours than students may experience in Oregon.

Courses or classes are called units at Deakin and are generally intended to be undertaken in specific years of a degree. In a Deakin undergraduate degree of three years, units are taken at three levels: first year (100 level), second year (200 level) and third year (300). These are generally equivalent to second, third, and fourth year of a U.S. degree.

Most units have a weighting of 1 credit point at Deakin. Students are required to take a full-time load while at Deakin which is 4 units per semester. Deakin does not allow students to take Deakin off-campus (distance learning) units. The number of credits earned in Oregon for these units will be determined by the student’s home campus, but has typically been around 6 credits per unit.

Registration and Credits

Students participating in this program will be registered at their home university in Oregon and will receive home campus credits for courses taken at Deakin University. Students’ course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at their home institutions. Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by their home university academic departments.

Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the Australia program. Students wishing to earn major or minor credits for courses taken at Deakin University are strongly advised to be in frequent communication with their advisor to determine what’s possible.

Because of the nature of this program, courses and credits are applied after completion of the program.

Deakin Campus Descriptions

Melbourne Campus at Burwood

The city of Melbourne has a population of 3.5 million and has all the attractions of a large city. It is considered by many to be the country’s cultural and sports capital. The Melbourne campus is located in the eastern suburbs of Burwood. The Burwood campus is 14 kilometre/8 miles from the Melbourne city center, which is about a 45 minute tram ride. The campus has an urban feel and is known for its modern architectural style. The central portion of campus has been renovated to include a landscaped courtyard as well as new buildings.

The Burwood campus has about 13,000 on-campus students. The areas of study offered at the campus include Arts, Business and Management, Communication and Media, Environment, Health and Community Services, Information Technology, Nutrition, Psychology, Science, Sport, Teaching and Visual, Performing and Creative Arts.

Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds

The bayside city of Geelong has 240,000 residents and is a one-hour train ride from Melbourne. The area is known for its combination of city amenities with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The Waurn Ponds campus is 10 kilometer/6 miles from the Geelong city center and is set on 300 hectares of landscaped grounds and sporting facilities. The campus has more than 4000 on-campus students.

The areas of study offered are Arts, Business and Management, Communication and Media, Engineering, Health and Community Services, Information Technology, Psychology, Science and Teaching.

Geelong Waterfront Campus

The Geelong Waterfront campus, located on Corio Bay in the city center, was originally built as a wool warehouse and shipping plant in 1893. The building was extensively renovated in the early 1990s and has received architectural acclaim. About 1200 students are based at the Waterfront campus and study Architecture and Construction Management, Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Social Work.

Warrnambool Campus

Warrnambool is a town of 29,000 and is located at the western end of the Great Ocean Road. It is about three hours from the Melbourne city center by train. The campus is 10 kilometers/6 miles from the Warrnambool city center and has 1,150 on-campus students.

Warrnambool is an ideal base for whale watching, visiting wildlife reserves and spending time on a spectacular coastline. Its proximity to a range of marine and freshwater aquatic environments provides an ideal location for specialist studies in aquaculture and marine biology.

Academic Calendar

Deakin University is on a semester system that follows the calendar year. General dates for the two semesters are:

• SEMESTER ONE: FEBRUARY – JUNE study period
• SEMESTER TWO: JULY-NOVEMBER study period
